educate people about Interstitial Cystitis
How it feels

It’s every bit as painful and debilitating as many of the other diseases/condtions that make people look sick but since we don’t usually appear to be ill and since it deals with the bladder, most people and indeed, many doctors laugh IC off.

Imagine the worst UTI you’ve ever had. If you haven’t had one, imagine your bladder filled with boiling sulforic acid and then peeing out this acid through a urethra that has been tenderized per your favorite steak. Now, imagine, if you will, this pain going on day after day after day. You have to void constantly. You’re sick to your stomach with the pain. Your back hurts.

Now imagine going to work and being told that you are fakeing. Imagine being told that you need to “tough it out” or to get some antibiotics and detrol and to quit complaining. Imagine losing your job because you can’t get out of bed and when you can get out of bed, you’re chained to the toilet. And you don’t know what’s wrong with you.

That’s just a little what IC is like.

Aarrrgghhh

That sounds horrible. I just when to a website about the IC and read some more on it – so you have successfully educated me about the condition. I cannot believe some doctors laugh it off! One article I read mentioned researched have identified a protein that is only located in the urine of affected individuals – showing it is a specific condition. Hopefully this bit of research will lead to a cure.

What does UTI stand for?

Uterine is my guess for U.

Please share more about the medical explication of this, its causes, the possible cures, etc.

UTI

Stands for Urinary Tract Infection, which usually means bladder infection.

The best thing I can do for medical explanations, etc. for you is point you to the IC handbook at http://www.ic-network.com/handbook/basics.html, which will get you started. IC is rather complex.

Right now the doctors are not sure what causes IC and there is no cure. Some people go into remission or can control their symptoms with medications such as Elmiron, some get relief from instills which is filling the bladder with medicines through a catheter. The illness is varies from person to person in terms of symptoms and severity. While some may just need to modify their diets, others go on to have their bladders removed.

In the very brief, IC is where the lining of the bladder has been damaged and is inflamed, which naturally causes pain. This inflammation can also affect the urethra. The symptoms range from voiding more frequently than normal to ulcerations of the bladder wall. Some people have little pain, others are in chronic pain and on heavy doses of opiates and nerve medicines that modify the pain response. Many people have a combination of urinary frequency, urgency, pressure, and pain.

I have IC

I’ve had it since oct 03 and was dx feb 19, 03.
