Do something art-related every day (read all 7 entries…)

Made pastels with my artist friends. I worked mostly in greens and then in an orange-y melon color. Others made blues and purples. The idea is to swap with the other artists, sharing all the colors, after the pastels are dry.

Got Papi? (Papacito) is headed back to Microsoft! :D

Please tell us ...

Please tell us how you made pastels. I find that fascinating.

I find this among the highest of all human activities—that you actually made your own art supplies toward the end of producing your own art.

By the way, is that your art in your profile? It’s lovely.

As a fly fisher, I can associate very much with this creative bent. (Don’t laugh.) When I tie my own flies and then use them to catch trout. We fly tiers are extraodinarily detail-oriented when we tie flies. There are certain nuances of color and ratios of structure that stimulate trout to attack. We pursue that ideal when we tie flies.

Papcito!

Yes, the paintings in my profile are mine from my “paint every day” goal. I appreciate your kind words!

I see the parellel between fly-tying and art supply making (using the tools we fashioned ourselves).

I am more interested in oil painting than pastels but I have made the acquaintence of a premier pastel artist (Kitty Wallis). She is the one who got us to make homemade pastels and I am happy for the experience. I would be interested in making my own oil paint too…but I confess it is quite easy to just pay for the nice paints I get at the store. Here is a link to the pastel making process. We didn’t wear anything protective aside from the gloves. What we did was similar to this:

Fly tying takes a steady hand! I have loved looking at the flies I have seen. :)

Celeste has gotten 4 cheers on this entry.
