You should use the crate for potty training as well as sleeping through the night. We potty trained our dog using the crate just as soon as we got him. He has had a dry every night since we got him in the middle of October. There are many websites that have create and click training that are very helpful.

We would then use treat and the click trainer when he had success on his walks. One click and a good boy, plus a little treat also helped in the process.
