do an experiment in social networking
here's the plan...

Take a piece of paper. Write your name on it, and a venue/time, maybe a restaurant or coffee bar. Give it to someone you know who wants to come along. They write their name after yours. Have a number of spaces for names, however many people you want to come along.

They have to give it to someone they know, but who doesn’t know anyone else on the list. Once the last person gets it, they can give it back up the chain to the first person so everyone knows who is going.

So you end up with a number of people most of whom only know two people there (the exceptions being the first and last people).

Feel free to apply other restrictions to this basic formula – making it boy-girl-boy-girl only, or whatever. It may be necessary to have some other inducement, like paying for the first X amount of the cafe bill.

I’m thinking of doing this for 10 people – quite whether its possible to find 10 people who are only simply connected like this, I don’t know!

let me know how it goes...

I think this is a fantastic idea. When I lived in South America, I often would host dinner parties where no one (but me) knew everyone. Another idea is to host a murder mystery dinner, where guests must come in character. It’s always good fun. The last one I hosted here in Asia was A Taste for Wine and Murder .The advantage that your idea has over mine is that people don’t have to worry about finding a costume.

details..

I think once we get six people its worth doing, so the plan might be for person number six to send word up the chain that we’ve made six, and the green light is on. Any advance on six degrees of separation is then a bonus, since it might get difficult to find people who don’t know anyone on the list!

I’ve thought of writing a web program to manage this, but it might get tricky, plus I like the idea of a real physical piece of paper being passed round, it’ll make sure there’s no duplicates. I dont want 128 people turning up…

let me know if it worked

I am thinking of some social experiments as well, this one seems interesting. Let me know how it goes…what places would you choose?

The count is on...

I’ve just started ‘Snice – the Social Network Interaction Curry Experiment. The plan is to go for a curry in just over two weeks time. My friend Rebecca has the papers, I think she’s going to pass it on to some guy in her canoe club (I know one of the canoe guys, so it can’t be him!). From there, who knows where it will go.

I’m also fronting 50 quid for the dinner, so that’s a fiver each. The idea being that people are less likely to cry off because they cant afford it. Too many of my friends are poor students!

wow! you have just given me..

...something quite curious to think about ;) I will be waiting for the curry experiment, too :) if it works well I can try it here in Sofia, Bulgaria :)

any news?

Hi Spacedman,

now are the things going with Snice? Have you tried it yet?...

Fell at the first hurdle!

Pah. Rebecca had a work crisis shortly after I gave her the sheet and I think she also decided she didn’t have any friends. And I’ve just been skiing. Oh well, will try again…
