Staying vegan is very important to me. Today I went to the store near my house and asked them if they have any “vegan- friendly” food items. The manager looked at me as though I was mental. I didn’t feel bad though because I said to myself: “It never hurt to ask”. Well they told about the frozen food and vegtables (which I already knew of) but they couldn’t give me any other specific food that had “vegan” tagged on it. I was disappointed but not embarrassed. So Saturday My Dad and I have to drive about an hour to get to the Whole Foods Market and Trader Joe’s. I really don’t like either store that much because Whole Foods Market have what I need but they are so damn expensive. Trader Joe’s is cheap but they don’t have many vegan food items. It kinda would be easier if I just moved to California when I graduate high school but I know I will make it. The only hard thing is that my mom wants to move me back to Louisiana (again) but there is nothing vegan oriented for miles. (The town I am moving to is the town I grew up in, which is not vegan friendly at all) But I really want to move to Georgia, New York, California, Florida, or Texas. She automatically said no to New York or California but a “maybe to Texas,Georgia, or Florida. Well I guess no matter where I go I know I am going to make it as a vegan because I have faith. Sorry for the boring story, just want to say how I am staying vegan and updates.
Comments:
OH YES THEY DO!!
Trader Joe’s has TONS of vegan food items. It’s a staple at my vegan co-op and at my boyfriend’s vegan co-ops.
I don’t know where you live, but I think TJ’s stock is pretty universal.
Here are many of my favorites:
- Stir fry the frozen veggies (from bags in the freezer sections) in some of the “Soy Vey” teriyaki sauce, or something similar. Toss them over soba noodles. Or wrap them up in some of the marvellous tortillas they have in their bread selection.
- ANY of the hummuses. Except maybe there are a few with cheese; check it out.
- Trader Joe’s vegan cookies
- Veggie burritos (Freezer section)
- Black bean and corn enchiladas (freezer section)
- Pound-plus bars of dark chocolate, especially the kind with almonds
- Any of the fresh fruits and veggies
- Many of their pasta sauces and similar things in glass jars are vegan. Again, great over spaghetti, soba noodles, etc.
- Dolmas: rice wrapped in grape leaves, in the fridge section.
- They have fake meat but their vegan cheese is gross.
- Their Tasty Bite Indian dinners in foil and cardboard boxes.
- Many of their soups are vegan.
If they don’t have any of this in stock they can probably special order it for you since it is available in other TJ’s stores.
Just get used to being a label-reader. (remember to avoid “whey” as well as milk, cream, eggs, cheese, etc.) Reading labels will tell you a LOT and is a good habit whether or not you’re vegan cause it helps you avoid all those hydrogenated oils & stuff.
Let us know how it goes!!
ok I will try it again. I wen there last weak and I couldn’t find much at all. But I will try your list and see. I know I found some good stuff in Whole Foods Market and Target.
Yeah, drop us a note
and let us know how it all went!!
Whole Foods is the bomb!
TJ’s is less expensive though.
Try my list. See if they’ll order.
Cool thing you have such a supportive dad who’s willing to drive you an hour!
If you cook & have a decent sized freezer, you may be able to reduce your number of trips by stocking up on frozen veggies, burritos, etc.
Amber has gotten 2 cheers on this entry.
