make creme brulee
My creme brulee fiasco 2 years ago

Soooo, I finally got the guts to try making a creme brulee. I am a baker, but have never even tried a pudding before, so a rather complicated and picky custard seemed a bit insurmountable. Not to mention the fact that I am a college student and can’t have open fire in my apartment, so I’d have to chance it with our rather finicky broiler.
Did I mention I’m a vegan as well?
Anyway, mixed up the custard and was very happy with it. Sprinkled sugar on top; then the fun started. The broiler didn’t get hot enough, so the sugar did not melt quickly enough. I had to pull the creme brulee out of the oven to put more ice around it to keep the custard cool. Twice. Finally, the third time, I didn’t want to pull the whole pan out, so I just tossed ice cubes into the pan around the brulee. Bad idea. Cold water splattered onto the light bulb in the back of the oven, causing it to explode. Yes, explode. Well, the sugar never completely crystallized on top, and there are specks of glass all over from the light bulb.
Oh well. At least I did make one. And the wine was good, even if we didn’t get a taste of the creme brulee. I’ll definitely try again, because it’s fun if nothing else. Perhaps I’ll wait until I get home and can use a torch.
