I’ve actually done this though debating although I’m not an Atheist myself. I still believe it’s better to believe in nothing then to get wrapped up in a destructive religion and let it control your life. Most Atheists I know are more fun to talk to for the most part.

hypocrite
in my view there's too much of too many trying to turn others into something else
I think one finds truth as one’s own integrity directs (whether you think that integrity is god-given or rational-mind given)... sets one’s path, follows it to the best of one’s ability… LIVES their truth…
And if that truth is true enough, it has its effect. It shines through one; it sometimes changes others over time; incidentally; by attraction, by glow, not by proselytizing or arguing or threatening or browbeating.
We all have more than enough work caught out for ourselves in answering our own questions and getting clear with ourselves.
Inner peaces slowly, surely brings outer peace. It’s to be lived.
Well, I never threatened, browbeated, argued, or proselytized anyone into actually giving up their religion or for that matter changing it. (Mind you I’ve had some heated arguements with people online, etc..) In the cases which I was speaking of were friendly debates (in person) with people I liked and cared about. They were the ones that made the decision to call themselves Atheists.
Well of course, if it's intellectual argument for the (fun) sake of intellectual argument...
... that’s a whole different thing.
We live in strange times. Shiites kill Sunnis, Sunnis kill Shiites, when they’re not busy killing Israeli Jews who are killing them, while our (I’m American) Christian-majority jumps into the Promised Land to make its incompetent and senseless, terrible contribution to the Armageddon. So many who are true believers (of anything, just about) are ready to slaughter true believers of something else… religion, in this new millenium, seems to be competing with race and ethnicity, yet again to provide a rationale for bloodshed and division.
Clearly, and thankfully, YOU are not in this mess! Also clearly, it’s much on my mind.
To some extent, too, I was responding to the person in the thread above me, whose one word comment was “hypocrite.”
The news just seems to get more incomprehensible by the day. Like Voltaire, I guess cultivating my own garden may be the way to go.
Not that we should give up voting, mind you!
Anyway… the main thing is I’m GLAD to here about friendly debates… Very.
One of my core beliefs is debate ideas, don’t attack people.
