help people escape cults (read all 9 entries…)
Destructive Cults 2 years ago

I have found Steven Hassan’s book, Combatting Cult Mind Control to be a fascinating read. It’s also very enlightening with regards to many tactics used by various organizations described as dangerous cults. He calls them dangerous for a number of reasons, but the one that resonated with me was the manner that they use guilt and fear to keep people from leaving their ogranization.

I was associated with a dangerous cult from 1987 until 2002. There were times when I wasn’t an active participant, but during this whole time I believed that I was either doing god’s will, as taught by this organization, or I stood condemned, awaiting destruction by God.

I’m still recovering from the damage this well-known organization perpetrated against me and I’m committed to helping others escape their paralyzing hold.

The group I’m referring to is Jehovah’s Witnesses. I hold no animosity toward anyone at any level of this group, but I’m 100% convinced that the guilt and fear tactics they use against their own people signify they are destructive and signify a danger to their adherent’s emotional, spiritual, financial, and physical well-being.

leahjt is having a day off ... maybe read a book :)

maybe i may check this out

i have limited knowledge of all the beliefs of jehovah’s witness, but do have a bit of understanding of things regarding fear tactics within religious organizations.

it's a great read

It doesn’t specifically deal with the jehovah’s witnesses, but it does deal with the things that destructive cults have in common.

Very fascinating. The author was a moonie for two and a half years.

YES

it does sound interesting. i think there are other places like what you describe the JW to be.

Yep

You are right. Unfortunately, as long as people are vulnerable, there will be those who take advantage of them. That’s why it’s so handy to be able to recognize the signs of mind control. I wish I would have known this in 1987.

Thanks for all your comments. :-)

i also think...

that they truly believe this to be truth. they don’t think it is NOT mind control or spirtual abuse. they actually believe they are following God.

Good Luck ...

as you find an affiliation that doesn’t use fear in association with faith. I am a firm believer in God, but I also believe in free will and choice. I don’t know a lot about JW but I do know some people that are members – and the joke would always be that they know more about the Bible than the rest of the family. I don’t think its a joke anymore. Knowledge can be a blessing or it can be a danger, and memorization is no longer what I believe to be the end all and be all of knowledge.

I wish you well.

I wish you well

As a JW, I did learn a lot of scriptures, but I didn’t become a loving person. I was judgmental towards myself and others from trying to serve a god that was never satisfied and who constantly reminded us of all the people that would soon be destroyed in armageddon.

Once I escaped, I learned that the fear tactics were simply meant to keep the “faithful” in line and subjugated to the leadership’s rules and regulations.

Here’s an example of one of their rules. If a woman is raped and fails to scream during the ordeal, she must have wanted it and thus can be punished by the congregation for immorality.

The rules and regulations of the JW make serving god a chore and a burden rather than a blessing.

Thank you

We are kindred spirits. I can’t see ever being associated with an organized religion either. At least not for religious reasons. God doesn’t need that from me.

He doesn’t need anything from me. He’s that smile and warm hug waiting for me when things get tough. He’s the kernels of curiosity that keep my interest for life alive. Always there. Always caring. Always available to me.

Yeah, I don’t need any group and especially not a group that paints God as an unpleasable monster who tempts his creations with conditional love.
