I live in an apartment. It’s not big enough and it’s not mine. I want the freedom to have a backyard temple and paint on the walls if I want, and more than six inches of extra space to store things in. I’d like a guestroom. I want a home, not a rented space.

If you got a parcel on land you could build one
Or maybe you can fix up an older house.
Would you be content with a small house to start with? Interest rates are still comparitively low, aren’t they?
Then, I wonder if you would qualify for a Habitat House. Hmmmm… They probably want you to have kids and all that. But who knows?
Or maybe you can form a writers’ coop, and you all together can buy the house. Create a contract which states that the house will remain in perpetuam for the purpose of young writers, and make certain rules which will require that each writer invest a certain amount of time working on the upkeep or renovation/restoration of the house.
There is material available on forming a community like this from the Catholic Workers or H.O.M.E. in Orland, Maine.
Getting a house
I’m afraid I have not the resources to do things like fixing up an older house or dealing with any interest rates. I am literally quite far below the poverty line even as defined by the government. I live on less than eight hundred dollars a month. And while “writers’ coop” sounds interesting in theory, there is of course the fact that if I can help it I never want to live with other people again. I do appreciate the suggestions but realistically they either are impossible or don’t mesh with my other goals anyway. Unfortunate. :(
