I love to read and have sometimes dropped a note to a favorite writer in care of their publisher. And nowadays one can sometimes find a website for them. In fact, after I read ‘Book Lust’ by Nancy Pearl I emailed her with some suggestions that she might include in her second book. And indeed, when ‘More Book Lust’ was published not only were my suggestions included but she also gave me credit in the acknowledgements. I was thrilled! I’d like to send a note to Annie Dillard and if you have any contact info for her other than her publisher I would be extremely grateful to have it. Thanks.

A lot of times writers are also professors. But it looks like Ms. Dillard stopped all that in 1981!
I found an address online for her secretary:
Annie Dillard
c/o Ms. Kathy Zimmermann
143 W. Margaret Ln
Hillsborough, N.C. 27278
And for her agent:
c/o Timothy Seldes
Russell and Volkening
50 W. 29th
New York, NY 10001
I think I’d try the secretary first!
wow, that was fast!!!,,,thanks so much for the info and i will send my note in care of her secretary,,,your job must be fascinating,,,what could be more interesting than ‘finding things out’?....i may be still under the influence of all those nancy drew books i read as a girl,,,;-)

There are boring parts of the job, like checking the five New York City phone books or reading the fourth rewrite of a not very good script, but mostly I love it.
It’s great to work in a place where talking about movies and tv is legit and where all the esoteric knowledge I’ve picked up along the way actually counts. In my first week, someone was trying to figure something out, and I knew it was an Edgar Allen Poe quote and she said, “Oh, I think you’re going to be very handy.” It was a very good moment for me. ;)

I hope so!
I have the feeling that my note reached her at about the same time she was finishing up her new novel “The Mayfields.” So she was probably kind of busy. But I don’t hold a grudge,,,:-)
I have her novel on my wait list at the public library. And if I like it, I’ll send her another note!!! (Although, honestly, I’ve never been a big fan of her fiction.)

It’s so inspiring to see a person act so selfless and helpful to perfect strangers….You just made my day! I have seen a goal on some lists, “Help People who Help People”....you might want to add that one to your list…that’s exactly what you’re doing here. I can’t think of anyone I need help finding right now…but I will certainly know who to come to. I don’t have any cheers left today :( but I would have cheered your Door & Hand photos….I absolutely love them…I have always wanted my own collection of these pics as well…I just never seem to do it.

With those hand and door and whatever else collections. It’s a fun little self-assignment. I like the hands in the photo you posted!
Do let me know, I do research for a living.
Recently I helped a friend find the contact information to write a letter of thanks for a Rubbermaid mailbox that had worked well. As it turned out, the mailboxes are made by a small company in South Carolina… and the contact ended up being someone I know, and who my friend knew years ago… they were nuns in a play together a looong time ago.
So now they’re in touch again, on top of everything else.
You just never know!
