Lessons...

I’ve been looking into local classes and prices…but I can’t decide What kind of dance I wanna take! Swing? Ballroom? Bellydance? What Do You Guys Like?

Comments:

I’m personally really interested in salsa, but I think I’m looking at swing or cha cha or some “social dances” (waltz, foxtrot, etc.).

Good luck picking one!

Check out a sampler class or attend a ballroom party

As someone who teaches and competes in ballroom and latin dances, and who dances the social dances as well, I’d say to check out a sampler class at a local ballroom or dance studio. They are usually moderately hokey classes, but they will give you a sense of whether you respond well to swing or if you like the feel of waltz—or both (if you’re like me). And you’ll get a few basic moves in each dance.

Alternately, don’t be afraid to go to one of the “parties” that the ballrooms put on. Go early and take the beginning lesson (most offer a beginning and intermediate lesson before the open dancing). For $10-15 you’ll get a lesson and open dancing, and you’ll get to watch people dance lots of different styles over the course of the evening.

Most classes and lessons rotate partners (a good thing—it helps you learn 30% faster) so you’ll always have someone to dance with, and if you’re stuck with someone who is a bit less coordinated, it’s only for a short time. :)

Enjoy and feel free to contact me if you’d like more info about getting started dancing. I know a lot about dance in the SF Bay Area so if you are nearby, I can direct you to the right places!
