I ran a fairly large online magazine for about a year. I put in countless late nights creating totally free content. I worked hard on the project, just to provide information, ideas and entertainment to the internet world. As the months went by our popularity grew and we had thousands of hits per month. Despite the numbers, we only got maybe a dozen or two emails the entire time with any kind of feedback (good OR bad).
Those emails, where you write and say, “I enjoy your site, I enjoy your work, thank you for creating something that entertains and educates me” are very very powerful. Sometimes, it was those emails that kept us going and gave me the motivation to finish the latest issue.
I want to encourage you to reach out and give feedback about how much you enjoy something. Just think of the time and energy that goes into the regular maintenance of a site that probably doesn’t bring in much money at all (there is very little money to be made with even the most successful sites). So if it’s not the money, it’s dedication… it’s passion for the work… and that is always well feed with appreciation and feedback. :)
