61. The Devil Wears Prada

Why is anyone taking this movie seriously? OK, they managed to land some acting talent—Meryl Streep is about as interesting as she ever is (though I’m not saying much when I say that), and Stanley Tucci is always fun to watch. But neither of them has made a career of being picky about their movie choices. And beyond them, this movie is exactly what you think it is. Namely, derivative crap. If you are turned off by the presence of talent-void actors like Anne Hathaway and pretty-boy Adrian Grenier—as, of course, you should be—then don’t waste your time.

In case you’re wondering, I saw it because we usually watch a movie with the Mother-in-Law on Christmas. And it was either this or Rumor Has It. Not sure I made the right choice.

Ha!

They drug you kicking and screaming to the couch, did they?

To be fair

I did willingly agree to see it. Mostly because people and critics that I respect seem to be taking it seriously. Unfortunately, they were all seriously misguided in this instance.

I actually enjoyed it… One of those cases where I was more willing to suspend my disbelief. To me it was one of those films you have to accept as a genre film to enjoy.

But no, it should not be considered for any awards of any kind.

I’m on the fence about Meryl Streep usually. The only thing I really loved her in was River Wild, which is pretty formulaic itself. (But the role is for me one of the best heroines ever…that’s the kind of strength and intelligence I aspire to I guess, so I forgive some of the cheesy elements of the film.)

spoko has gotten 2 cheers on this entry.
