WATCH MORE JAPANESE "DORAMA"
If your into Jpop, then taking the next step into J-dorama seems inevitable

Having found Japanese culture new and refreshing, I have come to discover J-dorama. Here in the United States, our “soap operas” seem to go for years. How long has “General Hospital” been on? Since longer than I can remember. J-doramas only go for about 11-to 12 episodes, and then maybe a follow up movie. Sometimes they are longer or shorter, but mostly come in one fine little package.

Many of the actors come from various backgrounds. Some are pop singers, (like Otsuka Ai) or from Pop bands, (like KAT-TUN) and others have been teen idols, models or have done commericals. J-doramas often adopt their theme music from some of the various Jpop and J-rock band hits much like Anime has done. An artist who has released a song, knows they will be successful if their song not only gets lots of air play, but is adopted as a theme for Anime or Dorama. Both, puts them in the spotlight for a long, long time.
I would have to say that of the ones I have seen, or have purchased on DVD, 95% of them are really very, very good. Like life itself not all of them have happy endings. Sometimes the main character or love interest dies. Sometimes they are based off of real stories in the news or off the Internet like Densha Otoko (Trainman). But you will not be bored, and in fact its easy to get hooked in.

Many times I have started a series wondering where it was going to go, wondering if it was going to be bad, but I am never disappointed. You have to expect that having a box of Kleenex near by is part and parcel of the experience, but I still love the programs and can not get enough of them.

Happily this is not a problem. For while the Asian video store I go to will sell the DVDs at around $30.00 for a three disk set, one can still watch them for free if one knows where to go on the world wide web. (AZNV.TV for example) I find that for me, as a student learning Japanese, I can hear the language in its natural use, and of course there are always subtitles in English which allow you to enjoy it more.

An Alternate Opinion

Okay—first of all, I think that you are totally right. Watching Japanese dramas is a great way to increase comprehension, fluency and cultural understanding…

But if I have to watch one more “talent” from SMAP simper and pout in an attempt to act, I swear I’ll gore both my eyes out with disposable chopsticks.

With that said, there are always a few genuinely cool or funny dramas out there. I liked Beginners and Rikon Bengoshi and there was a very cool/creepy mystery drama whose name escapes me (It was about a woman who had murdered her co-worker and was just about at the end of the statute of limitations when a mysterious… does anyone know what I’m talking about?)

But the painfully bad ones are about 3 to 1. The TV industry in Japan knows that since the series are so short the fame of the star is more important than the quality of the acting or writing.

So my advice would be, try out some Japanese dramas, but don’t be too shocked if they suck. Keep looking for the good ones. And above all avoid SMAP.

You may be right about the TV Industry in Japan, however most of those I know, who watch these, simply love them. If you don’t buy that, check out the forum at Aznv.tv or Aznv.net and see the responses. The best part, is you don’t have to devote the rest of your life to one show like a “General Hospital”, unless of course you don’t mind doing so. Even the best shows can seem to get boring after eight seasons.. No mattter how good the writing and the acting.

Got it!

That crime drama I mentioned is called “Kyohansha”—loosely translated as “Partners in Crime.” Very well made and genuinely suspenseful.

Also, incidentally, I started watching Densha Otoko last night. Over-all it was hilarious. I’ve met guys like that.

I still stand by my assertion that most of the dramas aren’t very good—but that’s something that is equally true of North American TV. One way or the other, you can lot from them (even the bad ones.)

DocD not much time till BRIGHTLIGHT

Japanese dramas

These dramas were my life. I acted in them and other TV shows, films, stage, CMs, and anime for many years in Japan. Some are good, some are not so good, but they paid well and made me a star, so I can’t knock them.
