build a house
dream, dream, dream...

It is a dream of my wife’s and mine to one day own some land out in the “rurals” somewhere. This will not be anytime soon I think, but it is a dream of mine to build my own house on that land, or at least a building structure of some sort.

Considering I’ve never done this, nor have I had any experience in this area, it is a pretty big ask, but if you can’t dream it, you can’t do it. I know that I want it to be either mudbrick or straw-bale and I’d especially like it to have some “sunken” feature about it (meaning that I’d like it to extend into the earth it is built on), helping with coolness in summer and warmth in winter. It would be especially nice if our land had an east-facing hill/mountain on it so that it could be built into the hill facing the sunrise…ahh, I’m good at this dreaming stuff.

There is a house...

A government funded program built a house about 20 years ago, (connected with JBU I think) that was convection heated and cooled by geothermal/solar powered convection. Awesome design, easy built!

Here’s the problems:
The solar panels were steam induction coils (a black painted tin box covered with tempered glass, with popcans filled with concrete, then half inch copper line wrapped in continuous coils in the unit) that heated the water and helped the back up heating system. Sprung leaks like crazy, especially since there were no temp controls on the units, and some temps got hot enough to melt the solder on the pipe…

Main problem number 2: Mold in the concrete under house… And bleach doesn’t kill mold, it only dries it out.

Ah, I’m rambling again…

Worthwhile goal! Keep going! Remember: small steps
