It didn’t take much time or effort (especially as he was admitted to college at age 8) and our son graduated a couple months ago with two bachelor’s degrees at age 13 (with lots of honors, like Outstanding Achievement in Computer Science and Phi Beta Kappa). I remember my brother asking me during a beach vacation when my son was 5, “So when are you going to let him into the real world?” The notion of traditional schools being “the real world” still cracks me the heck up. Anyway, my brother stopped asking me that question years ago. Our son had three job offers at age 8, has quite a nice financial portfolio for a kid (better rounded than his parents), got to travel plenty in his childhood (started by business trips, his first being at age 8; during his college years, he visited 17 countries and he’s been to 33 states), and still gets to do all the regular childhood stuff (like yesterday, he was at an all day anime movie marathon at the home of a friend he’s know since he was 4 and she was 3 and he played “Sorry” – a gift she had given him). Being homeschooled allowed him to not only learn, but have the feeling that learning is fun, and to not just enjoy the company of those his own age, but those of all ages. He’s equally comfortable on the swings on a playground as in a professional conference or business meeting…not too many teens can say that.
I can't say enough good things about it
