I live in Chicago so public transportation can get me anywhere I want to go in the city. I haven’t had a car in over a year. Amtrak or bus is fine to get me home and ends up being cheaper than paying for the gas it would take to get me to and from my family 5 hours away. I spend about as much on my monthly bus/train pass as I did on car insurance alone—much less if I were paying for gas and parking. Although I can’t imagine doing it in a smaller, less urban area, living without a car has been easier than I thought it would be.
It wouldn't work everywhere...
