Since some of these are some of my oldest sources of credit, I’ve decided to keep them around to avoid hurting my FICO score. I’ll just destroy the cards, so that I’m no longer tempted to use them.

Very good!
I just read about this in a book that I purchased recently by Suze Orman. It talks about just this. How your credit and FICO scores are based on your history. So, taking the scissor the the card is a way better solution to closing a bunch of unused open accounts. This way the positive history is still in tact and your temptation to spend is thwarted . . . well delayed?
Good stuff . . .
