if we all banded together we could have something like an ‘openspaceship’ project like open-source…everyone contributes to a subproject and we build it together..basically one group designs a gps navigation unit…one group the life monitoring system…one group does _...if you can’t help build or design you can contribute financially or through resources..what it really entails is project management…when you subdivide the goal into smaller more manageable tasks it’s just like programming and I see this easily coming into life…the cool thing since it follows the open source model is that I predict there would be many splinter factions as there are many different browsers, desktops, email programs, etc.
there are already social sites that are massive and have hundreds of thousands of members..how hard would it be to organize this?

just wanted to update this post because I just recently launched a website at http://www.openship.net specifically for this purpose. This website is primarily right now just a place for developers to get together to plan out what the real cms will be like; however users can definitely post in the wiki/forums for right now.
