My mother was a singer…still is, actually. I used to sit around a listen to her play her guitar and sing for our family and friends and WISH I could be as captivating. Then, my sophomore year in high school I signed up for the musical. “Hello, Dolly!” I had never really sang in public, despite years in the chorus at my middle school. That year I began my journey to actually being a singer.
Now, after 5 musicals, I’ve developed a unique and interesting voice that is, well, entirely unfit for musical theatre. I still can’t read music, but I can carry a tune- just not in a bucket. Singing is the greatest escape and therapy because you can get all of the tension in your body concentrated into one area, and use that tension to make beautiful sounds.
