i must do this. i must do this without holding my nose, somehow. i want to learn to surf better and it would be so much easier if i could only swim better. snorkeling would be easier, too.

You’ll just have more fun surfing, snorkeling, etc. if you learn to swim. See if there is a Master’s swimming program at a public pool near you. Or see if the local community college teaches swimming.
It’s a life skill that comes in handy.
