spend a day saying hello to every stranger I pass in the street
howdy stranger

You know, you see them coming, size them up surreptitiously, you think maybe you’ll say hello to this one and then as you get close you suddenly each pretend the other doesn’t exist, as if saying hello to a stranger makes you some kind of weirdo. I don’t get it.

My gaze is always at eye level and I smile at everyone I lock eyes with and usually it elicits hello’s or smiles.

I used to say hello to everyone in Paris

...and then, someone tried to follow me home. I came from a small town in Colorado where a smile and “hello” are normal. Here, if you are a lady, it is a bit of a problem if you say “hello” first. If you said hello and smiled at me on the street, I would smile and say hello back…promise.
