The three most hideous letters: ABD. If you have to, just write enough to get by. It doesn’t have to be perfect, just DONE. Even if you don’t want to teach or do anything with it (I’ve moved on to a different field entirely), for your own sanity, push as hard as it takes, and then know that you’ll never have to go through it again. And you won’t have to spend the rest of your life thinking, “I didn’t make it.”
So what if I dont make it. Does that make me less of a person. or an inferior person? academics all seem to think that having a phd (or other degrees) automatically makes you a greater person. the reality is it does not. there are great academics. sure. probably in a similar % as there are great people working as shopkeepers (or any other profession normally not considered to be very “important”).
you should do a phd if you belive in it passionatelly. its like painting or writing. its closer to being an artform than most people realise.
