bibliomane hope over fear

become an excellent public speaker and teacher (read all 5 entries…)
today 1 year ago

I’m teaching a one hour Ovid MEDLINE class. Wish me luck.

The first time I taught this, my boss told me I left stuff out and didn’t go into enough detail. The second time I taught it, he told me I went into too much detail and that I should try to be funny. I haven’t figured out yet how to make MEDLINE searching entertaining, much less funny. Apparently, I would make a poor stand-up comedian, since I seem to have trouble being funny under pressure.

I’ll stop feeling so nervous eventually, right? I hope so, if I just keep getting up and talking to groups of people.

well, it went okay

I had a different librarian observe my MEDLINE class today. She said that I didn’t seem nervous, that I seemed natural speaking to people. So, that is good, since I was actually nervous, although not as nervous as I was the last couple of times. And, we were able to talk about what how I did and discuss some ways to improve the next time. Eventually, perhaps I’ll stop feeling so darn nervous!

Dear bibliomane

(by the way, why do you call yourself “bibliomane”, it has a meaning in italian, as far as I know, but in english what were you aiming at?)
I just wanted you to know that I share your fears, and found some good help while reading R. Boice’s book “Advice for new faculty members”, which deals with teaching in the first section (pp. 11-101) and in particularly pp. 47-74.
Let me know how you are doing!
I’m starting my first course at university in a month and am indeed very nervous myself…

thanks for the support

I shall seek out that book, thank you!

What will you be teaching??

re bibliomane: what does it mean in Italian? I just checked it really quickly in babelfish and they translated it as “bibliomaniac”, which is pretty much what I’m going for, but I know babelfish isn’t always accurate. The meaning I intend is something along the lines of: avid, perhaps compulsive, collector of books.

:-)

I’ll be teaching philosophy, and am actually quite excited, beyond being a little worried.
Yes, bibliomane means what you wrote.
