cultivate Optimism (read all 6 entries…)

I’ve noticed that with my students if I believe that they can succeed, I feel like I’m fighting half the battle with them. They often come from homes where they never see their parents (or have NEVER seen one or more of their parents) and rarely if ever have someone say “I BELIEVE IN YOU!” Optimisim starts by automatically EXPECTING that my students should be optimistic with themselves. This is hard when telling them whether or not they should go on to honors next year or stay/ go down to regular English (since we are registering for next year right now) but reminding them the future is out there and IT STARTS NOW I hope helps them imagine themselves in any role they want and that they should stop dreaming and start doing NOW. I love my kids…they are MY kids for 90 minutes a day…and I want them to chase the same dreams and possibilities that I did. Sometimes this gets clouded with crankiness and bad attitudes and problem students etc. etc. etc. but I need to remind myself to be persistant, to believe in them, and to believe in myself.

Beautiful

I’ve had many good teachers. I came from a place where no one told me how special I was, much like your students, and it made all the difference for a teacher to believe in me. I went to college graduated at the top of my class, and went on to do great things in my small way. It does matter that we believe in ourselves, and sometimes a teacher is the only advocate for what is possible for us. So please dream big for your students. If they don’t always meet the mark now, it doesn’t matter they may catch up later in a big way the way I did. It’s more important to speak the word of encouragement and affirmation and maybe even a little exaggeration at times… Tell them they can be anything they want!!! And believe in yourself and that you can inspire others, you are called to do that, that is your mission field. The only way I have found to stay inspired is to constantly keep stretching myself to be better, praying, fighting, crying using all of me to be a better me. Kudos to you for loving humanity enough to try to make a real difference.!!!!
