I built my yurt totally from scratch including sewing the canvas. It was really an empowering and fulfilling challenge. At the time, I planned on putting together complete documentation so someone else can do it. There are some good books out there but nothing I found gave explicit steps for some of the more challenging aspects of the design process. I think I have my next “thing” to do now! If anyone has questions, let me know. I’ll start digging up info!

How much did it cost you?
What materials did you use on the covers? I’m building one from scratch right now and it’s very exciting to hear others are doing it the way I do it. They can be made so easily and cheaply with used tents, ropes, and local trees. The documentation of your experience is a great thing if you can put it together. People are curious. I’ve had thousands of worldwide visitors at my ACL gertee page (that’s what I call my mixed version) where I posted pics of my 2004 model and a 15 inch replica model. I’ve started a small gertee business here in Kenny Lake where the first one is going to be a small museum. I’ll be building a 22 footer for myself next. Send me your info and I’ll add it to my ACL page. www.kennylake.com/gertees.html
Sorry...WAY behind!
I haven’t added up the cost and I doubt I ever will since it has been a few years and I’d have to track down a few receipts. On my first go at it, I was eager (impatient) so I took the easy route and purchased new flame-retardant canvas called Sunforger (typically used for boat covers). I was living in Taos, NM when I started it so I was using local lumber, but had to finish the rest when I was in the plains of W. Texas where we have to import our pine ;). I’m going to track down your contact info on your site and turn over my notes and diagrams because I know I may never take the time to really share the little bit of info I gathered while building mine.
