bring back my notebook from the dead (read all 3 entries…)
One of my worst fears 2 years ago

My beloved IBM R52 Thinkpad has gone comatose. I was using it fine this morning, but now I can’t seem to power it on! I swapped the power chord but still.. nothing. I know the battery is good, so it must be something internal, though I hope it’s not the motherboard. The thing is I won’t know much until I get back to work on Thursday. In the mean time, I’ll be using my home PC. I hope my hard disk is intact, coz I can’t afford to lose data. Frantically trying to recall if I saved anything critical on my local drive, but my recent work has been mostly saved onto the server, so that’s a good thing.

Trying hard not to panic. I am so dependent on it for all my work and personal needs, I am not sure how this will eventually affect me. It can be very bad, if I let it, so I’m trying not to. Whatever happens, I just hope I don’t lose my data.

Gosh, Thursday can’t come soon enough now.

Des is slowly regaining her sanity (unfortunately?)

That’s awful. I completely know how you feel. Nothing sends me into a mental breakdown like a computer malfunction. My laptop is practically an extension of my body. Seriously.

If you need the data off your hard drive, you can buy a piece of hardware that will convert your laptop hard drive into an internal hard drive that you can plug into a desktop computer. I’ve had to do this several times!

My friend

assured me that my data should be fine. If it was the hard disk I should still be able to power it on. I’m taking some comfort in that, and hope to get this sorted out first thing Thursday morning.

I almost hyperventilated when I realized what was happening. That bad.. :P Pulled myself together tho, mainly coz my latest work are mostly server-based. I just hope that this isn’t worse than what it seems. Fingers-crossed!

Adar is back.

Your data...

is almost certainly still there, although it may take a little doing to get at it, depending on what’s wrong. Don’t despair!

I had a computer accident last fall that made me something of a born-again backupper. My system, which is simple enough for me to maintain, is to back up documents and files and photos and such (no programs) onto one of those little flash drives. Anything REALLY critical I mail to myself on gmail, where it sits quietly in storage until and unless I need it again, neatly labeled.

But for now, just breathe deeply and know that this is probably not a disaster.

Good luck!

Thanks Adar

Born-again backupper.. I’m definitely a candidate for one of those.. ;) Like you say, the issue shouldn’t lead to data loss. But in my line of work, I’ve seen many instances whereby a minor thing lead to another, which invariably corrupts the file system, leading to some kind of data loss. So yeah, while all logic at this point tells me I shouldn’t worry, I’ve seen enough to expect the worse.

I don’t think I’d lose much of critical work files. The beauty of having online forums, repositories and dozens of document library on the office server means I seldom keep things on my local drive. The only thing remaining are my photos, private journals and archived emails. I surely wuldn’t wanna lose any of those, but it wouldn’t be the end of the world (I think!) if I did.

Thanks for the tip about emailing important files into Gmail, it’s about time I put my Gmail storage to good use like that. Thanks again Adar, have a good week ahead!

NinaWills has gotten 9 cheers on this entry.
