Get off the grid
Get Off The Grid

This is a house in Maine. It has received lots of press coverage and I am using it as my inspiration to get off the grid (GOTG). If anyone wants to read about it, their web site is www.SolarHouse.com.

I want to do this just for personal reasons – to be self-sufficient. Sure, it will help the environment but that is a secondary reason for me.

I don’t want to live in a shack so it will cost a good bit of money. The house in Maine is 2900 s.f. and that sounds about right to me. I wish to build my future green-home with cash so I owe no mortgage – again, I want to be self-sufficient.

I have already decided on some of the attributes of this house:

- solar and wind power, with battery reserve
- lot having a natural gas well (optional)
- wood stove in the living room
- propane back-up (optional)
- 4 car attached garage
- 4 car detached garage with studio above
- concrete insulated panels; not stick built
- ranch floor plan
- 5 acres
- full basement
- approximately 3000 s.f.

Congratulations

I too am going to be “off the grid”. I hope to close next week on a 21.5 acre property in one of the most remote places in the lower 48 states. The wildlife is amazing. Within 10 days we will start building with solar and a generator. I cant wait, its the life I love.

Congrats

Congrats on your up coming closing. That sounds great. Where abouts are you settling, and what type of terrain features did you look for? I am still learning but I have time since this will be a goal to accomplish about 3 years out.

Location

Its about 8 miles from Yaak, Montana. Full of deer, bear, mountian lion and all the rest of the wilderness creatures. I got my solar from http://www.backwoodsolar.com. The house is only 1289 sf but plenty for me.
Check out the attached picture. Where is your land?

Sounds cool

I had never heard this term before I saw your goal. Sounds fun. Do you have a family who will participate in this with you? I am curious about how many families vs. singles carry this plan out, and at what stage in their lives.

TurboRocket has gotten 5 cheers on this entry.
