pretty!
Les you look so pretty here! COME HOME NOW!
Could never get through Faulkner
And Eudora Welty isn’t all that easy either. Flannery O’Conner is my girl.
Bangs Head on DeskMUST FINISH!!! lol… yeah I am trying to get through the Random House 100 Greatest books…and there are 3 Faulkner books on there… So I am just going to read Sparknotes…They really help…If I read them ahead of time then I know what I am reading as I am reading…. Did that make sense?? lol

Sometimes it's better to suffer through...
and just get the feel of the language. Faulkner is sort of impenetrable, though, so a little help might make it more enjoyable. I need notes when I read Shakespeare; sort of the same thing. I guess the Deep South of the U.S. is as remote as Elizabethan England these days. I’ve actually found Joyce and Proust to be easier reads than Faulkner.
So, are you just reading for pleasure?
um huh
Yes I am reading for pleasure, I usually read a lot of Dean Koontz and newer authors, so I figured I would try and read some of the classics… The words in as I lay dying are not even words sometimes… I mean IE: et for eat? How are people Supposed to read that!! I am from the south..Texas to be exact and I cant even read it! lol
Leslie
Sure y'all can...
Just imagine it in someone else’s voice , you know like…hmmmmm who’s a famous texan?? No not GW, maybe one of these…

Flannery O'Connor rocks!
Thanks for reminding me. I used to teach “Everything That Rises Must Converge” in one of my intro lit classes, and I’ve never forgotten its impact.
Martha, the more I read about you...
...the more I wonder at all of the things you’ve done. Are you sure you’re not Superwoman?
So far, from subscribing to you, I’ve learned the following:
1. You’ve written a book about pets
2. You’ve taught an intro lit class (are you/were you a professor?)
3. You’ve taken some kind of improv class
4. You’ve developed some kind of scripts for something…
Can I be you when I grow up??? Huh, huh, can I???

I tried to write this before...
but I crashed.
Thanks for the applause! My life IS pretty cool. I am very grateful.
I have taught at a university-at NYU, but as an adjunct (i.e., part-time, non-tenure track) instructor. I say that not because I’m not proud of my teaching-I love to teach—but because I know how hard my actual professor friends worked.
I also used to develop TV movies, um, two careers ago.
There’s also a character named after me in a Mel Gibson movie!

Geesh, you picked a tough one.
Just so you know, Faulkner is tough going for a lot of us “high minded literary types” as well. Kudos for stepping up to the challenge!
I hate reading dialects, too. Sure, I can imagine what it sounds like, but then I read so slooooooooooooooowly…
I've heard it said...
...that one cannot read Faulkner. One can only re-read Faulkner.
“A Light in August” is my personal favorite of his.
