get rid of unnecessary possessions (read all 9 entries…)
More Not Less 2 years ago

Well, I didn’t make much progress here this past weekend as I added more things instead of getting rid of them. I was visiting my grandmother’s house and she was considering letting an Amish woman who is leaving the order move into her home. We met the young woman (24 or 26 y/o) and I gave her a tour of the rooms upstairs. She chose my Great Aunt Alice’s old bedroom, so since Grandma can no longer go up and down the stairs I set about cleaning out the room. I actually was very successful in emptying out the drawers of the dresser, clearing out the closet, and underneath the bed.

I wasn’t successful though in that I acquired a bunch of stuff. Among my acquisitions were:
  • My mother’s childhood jewelry box that contained her high school jacket letter, her sorority letter, her 4H pins, some skeleton keys, a dollar coin belt, a Christmas ornament, and some other items (eye drops, a Sears mercury battery)
  • My great aunt’s jewelry box that contained around 50 school photos of the kids (including me) that had been given to her, book marks, and other stuff
  • A Christian illustrated story that Grandma used back when she was teaching Bible Camp
  • A copy of my cousin Debbie’s manuscript for her book of poetry
  • A couple study guides that my Great Aunt Alice had written in
  • A collection of framed portraits and photos of the family of a friend of the family who has passed away and whose remaining family didn’t want (including a framed certificate of recognition for perfect attendance). None of these are people I know.
  • A twin framed piece of art that my cousin Travis’ mother Dolly made, though at the time I said I wanted it, I didn’t know she had made it.

Now do I really want or need any of these things, or are they just more unnecessary possessions? I actually left the bag of items in my bedroom at my parent’s house (with the exception of the manuscript), so I haven’t added to my apartment clutter, but still did I really need those items?

Comments:

Those are terrific finds!

They’re all so priceless, and I hope you decide to keep at least a couple of them.

Couple More

I forgot to include a couple other things I took, two of my baby blankets from almost 40 years ago. One is yellow with blue and green ducks on it. The other is white with some kind of pink pattern on it though it’s too faded for me to tell what.

Deni H is juggling a lot of balls right now.

I've found myself going through this type...

of process with my own stuff I already have over the past year or so as I slowly pull away at the layers of my own possessions.

wooleyduck is planning for a lot of change in 2009.

I think that’s a flaw in the wording of this goal. A lot of things that are unneccessary are still worth something to me on a personal level so I find them worth keeping. Don’t get rid of anything you will regret not having I suppose. I hope you kept some of it and it all sounds wonderful.

Kept Items

I actually kept them all. Someday down the road though I’ll have to determine whether they’re worth keeping or not.

sounds good

Just be sure to offer them to other family members first before discarding them or giving them away to others outside of the family.

Let them go! If you think they are unnecessary, they probably can go

On the other hand, what if a fire or burglary occurred? How would you feel about losing all that stuff?

Do you have renter’s or home owner’s insurance for all your chattel?

What is Unnecessary?

I never said they were unnecessary, but when you think about it everything we have is unnecessary. You don’t need a car. You can walk. You don’t need clothes. You can go naked. You don’t need furniture. You can sit on the floor.

Some of the items above would be a loss if they were stolen or burnt. The others less so.

I of course have a renter’s insurance policy, but while they may be able to replace my tv and clothes, they would never be able to replace the sentimental value behind family heirlooms.

Thanks for cheering my goal of getting well

Today is MOnday November fifth. I got well over the weekend, as well as can be expected considering my chronic g.i. tract situation.

Anyway, I was re-reading the above thread, and saw where you inherited Debbie’s (I don’t know who that is) manuscript of poetry.

Might you send in a copy of the manuscript to Copper Canyon for Debbie, provided of course you get her permission; another idea is you could donate the manuscript to the Museum or Archive of Unpublished Works in Burlington Vermont.

I don’t have the address but that is a very interesting place. I visited there in 1991. Maybe you could find them via a search engine or the Public Library in Burlington, or the University of Vermont.

So who is Debbie and why do you have her manuscript now? Yes, forgive me for being nosy.

Debbie

Debbie is one of my favorite cousins. Back when I was little, she was living with my grandparents next door. I had a crush on her and made a pact with her that if we weren’t married by the time I was 30, that we’d marry each other. (She’s 8 years older than me I think. I’d also had crushes on her two older sisters who also had lived with my grandparents, one at a time, until they got married.)

Thanks for asking. You aren’t being nosy. I took the manuscript because grandma wanted everything that was in that room to be trashed. I saw value in the manuscript. I haven’t read it since I took it, so I really should dig it out and do that. Thank you for bringing it back to my attention.
