Practice Yoga (read all 11 entries…)

Tomorrow...  — 1 year ago

I’m going to work on opening my hips. I think this may be the problem I have with the joint stiffness, and the fact that my pelvis has been unbalanced (right hip appears lower when laying down – I had help from my anatomy teacher finding this out),

Any advice from seasoned Yogis would be appreciated! I have stiffness and soreness when I attempt to turn out my right leg, it’s in the muscle right below the hip bone on the outer thigh. It could even be in the femoral ligaments? anyway advice would be great!

I'm not a seasoned yogi

I just do a bit of yoga at home on tape.

But I have pain in the same place. I think it comes from sleeping on my left side without a pillow between my legs. The weight of my right leg pulls at the hip joint. I’ve got a small pillow filled with buckwheat hulls, but I use it less than half the time.

You may just be onto something...

I sleep in the exact same position, although since this started I alternate left side with right side now each night. sometimes I sleep (usually by morning when I do this unconciously) with my lower leg straight and the top leg bent up high, I first noticed these pains when I slept this way and ‘shifted’ my weight sideways while putting all weight on the right (straight) leg.

It’s very annoying to say the least!
Specially when I remember how flexible I used to be until November last year (not really done any Yoga since then, in fact my Anat/Phys teacher reckons it’s the yoga that injured me although he is a proponent of Yoga.

I try sleeping on my back

but I tend to snore on my back, and my side is more comfortable – except for the right hip.

Sleeping on my right side is more comfortable, though I’d like to sleep more on my left – that’s where my wife is, and sometimes we like to hold hands while going to sleep.

What happened in November? I’m not clear. Did something happen while doing yoga?

Sleeping on my back

that’s probably the answer! I’ll only manage it till I fall asleep probably though, but that’s a start.

Sleeping on my left is best for me too cos my husband is that side, and also it is said to aid digestion in the stomach.

The thing I mention about November is that is when I first started to notice my joint felt stiff and sore – I had been sitting cross legged on the sofa to do some reading and suddenly I found myself unable to. Prior to then, I had been using a yoga DVD with some seated asanas – these involved similar leg positions that I am finding difficult at the moment – on the 15th November I made an entry which said I had found myself a little stiff and that certain postures caused a clicking in the joints, so it could be that I DID injure myself :(

Slowly getting my range of movement back though, last two nights I have sat cross legged and felt the stretch in the hip!

remember if it hurts dont do it

Good luck

To my knowledge a poping in a joint could mean that something is out of place or it is just air in the joint. It is none of my bussiness , but if you have had a child that very well could be some of the problem my wife had to go to a chiroprator.

Intersting about the sitting cross-legged.

I kind of think this whole thing started a few years ago when I started using my laptop computer in the car. I’d sit (parked) in the driver’s seat with the laptop on the passenger seat, while typing. After that I started noticing the right hip problems. My guess is the side-sleeping without pillow between legs made things worse.

Hope you’re feeling better!
