elizabethmerchant is having a great day.

go back to school (read all 7 entries…)
remembering a lesson learned...

i went to school, all told,
for about twenty years and got
a
terminal and advanced degree—-
(good grades, good student)
so when i decided to sign up
for a class on reading novels
at the
community college
i thought
“oh boy”
“whee”
“how fun”

(it’s online-
by the way)

we read the first four novels
and i posted
my thoughts…
reading my posts
and the others
the professor awarded full
credit
to most any posting

shocked,
i was,
at the level of thought behind
impressions
and the
responses….

i read the next novel and did a little research
background anaylsis
re-read critical theory
i’d put down a few years back
found out interesting

i read up on it
“gave it some thought”
applied the theory to
my analysis-
i posted complex, but coherant
thoughts

not full credit
not half credit
a failing grade

i emailed her and she whined
but still didn’t understand
my post

i remembered then-what i had learned
in my
twenty years of being
instutionalized education:
that want anything more than the
cliff notes
version

i remembered-
our education system demands:
we just
memorize facts
and recite the opinions
we are taught

critical thinking is just
too
scary

this time-
i’m not after something—-
no degree-
no honors-
no nothing-
just wanted to enjoy myself
learn a little bit
within a structure

i have failed in that quest
or have i

elizabethmerchant is having a great day.

The kind of discussion that I had hoped for.

Both quotes are good and insightful..thanks…(and I’ll come back to them on this post), but first:

While I am disgusted by a lot of the formal educational systems I’ve been exposed to, I will give this teacher a break. After all, she operates in it and in many ways is a product, like the rest of it. I will also say that I have had wonderful teachers. (In fact, when I realized what had happened in this class with me, the first person I called was one of my former professors to discuss it.)

Another problem, in this situation, is that this is an on-line class. In an in-person class, these comments would have been part of a discussion and most likely, it would have lead to a deeper discussion of the material.

Finally, another mistake that I made was failing to follow the instructions. After reading the posts in the class that had been posted to date, it appeared to me that something in the nature of a journal entry about a novel was acceptable. However, I returned to the syllabus and she wants the plot summary, why we like the novel, who are the main characters…so I probably should have paid more attention and avoided the class if I didn’t want to engage in a fill-in-the-box exercise.

On the quotes-it’s most interesting that you post the first one. There seem to be two schools of thought in art and literature. One is that the author communicates some type of absolute truth that a “good” reader will discover. The other (my view) is that each reader or viewer brings their own history and ideas to any literature or work art. The true art is created when the reader or viewer is engaged with the artwork or literature, which produces a unique work each time it is read or examined. When I discussed this issue in one of the first exams in this class, the teacher clearly fell in the first camp and wrote “interesting theory” beside the other notes.

Thank you very much for reading this rambling…this is the type of discussion I had hoped to have in the class. I could have saved a couple of dollars.

Niel is doing whatever it takes ...

How schools work.

With apology to all the good teachers out there:

I’ve come to the conclusion that the universal success of school systems are not due to the system of teaching, but to the fact that people are brought into contact with books. Some of those people learn to read books, some don’t. Some of the readers learn to choose their teachers, and go on to become scholars. The majority of people in school merely absorb some facts, and become useful citizens.

This is just an opinion.

You just made me feel so much better

If i think hard enough, i can trace the beginning of the end of my respect for “school” back to one professor who treated any extensive thought as youthful arrogance, punishing expostulations and suppositions and rewarding the parroting of facts and the regurgitation of Google results. Up until her class, i had always felt encouraged to think and empowered by the thoughts yeilded. She really took the shine off of independent thinking, and while I by no means blame her for the fact that I lost interest in regular old college, I can safely say she dealt a mortal blow. Your poem is awesome though, and it makes me a little more emboldened to go back to school (at the jaded and financially unstable age of 25).

elizabethmerchant has gotten 5 cheers on this entry.
