have a vegetable garden. (read all 5 entries…)
This Year's Garden 1 year ago

I will plant tomatoes in the upside-down tomato planters, and herbs and some peppers in the top of those.

Then, where I had the tomatoes and herbs last year, I think I’m going to plant lettuce, squash/zucchini, and some peas. Maybe some more herbs, too.

How long is your growing season?

And when will you be able to start planting? Do you start your plants indoors from seed? I imagine you must be pretty selective about what you plant! I do well with herbs and flowers but haven’t really had success with vegetables – probably because I haven’t really tried! Every year I swear I will at least try tomatoes and I never do. Maybe this year…:)

Growing Season

We usually plant in mid-to-late May, which is when the danger of frost has passed. We usually wind up around September, at least with warm-weather stuff.

I don’t start plants indoors from seed; I did that one year but didn’t get much out of it. I prefer just picking up plants from my local nursery when I’m ready to plant them.

You really should try tomatoes! They’re really easy, and there’s just nothing like tomatoes fresh from the garden. The flavor is so much better, and there’s nothing like fresh marinara made from garden tomatoes.

OMG, I can’t wait . . . .

Upside down tomato planters

look so cool. Do you like them better than just using a tomato cage? Do they dry out too quickly (being in a container as opposed to being in the ground?)

Not sure yet

They were supposed to be my mother’s day present from P and the girls last year, but they were backordered, so I didn’t get them until way after time for tomato planting. (I think it was September or October.)

But supposedly they’re better than cages because they help prevent disease and pests. They’re also real space savers because you can grow several tomatoes in each one, and also grow herbs or peppers on top.

I got interested in them after seeing similar planters used in Disney World, in “The Land” pavilion in Epcot.

I'm afraid to try them

though we have slug problems with tomatoes. But what I’m afraid of is that the tomatoes will be so heavy and break the fragile vines. I break enough vines just reaching in to pick them. I don’t know why I think they’ll be more fragile upside-down, but I just do.

You’ll have to post reports about how successful this method is!

Breaking vines

That’s a good question. I’ll definitely keep you posted.

They seemed to work well at Disney World, but then so do the gigantic mice, so who knows?

I'll try mine too

Got ‘em last year but then became intimidated by the technology involved!
