teach english as a second language
this is tough! 2 years ago

I started tutoring a spanish doctor in English, he deosn’t speak a word of the language, and i’m having a really tough time figuring out ways to teach the most basic parts of our language. Especially because I really don’t know much about english grammar rules, i can just speak it. Honestly, I think it would be easier for me to teach spanish becuase I’ve actually learned that language formally. If anybody knows any good tips for teaching english grammar let me know.

Comments:

don't teach the grammar

teach situations (especially if he is a complete novice).

Good morning ! How are you ? My name is Dr. blah blah blah. I’d like a cup of coffee and four pieces of cake, please.

Prepare some dialogues and work on pronounciation.

If nothing else, you will be the best English teacher he has ever had.

Good luck !

Functions

Fromatto has the right idea, consider the function of what you are trying to teach and then assess their competency in achieving that.

A function is what we have to do with the language resources we have, buying a train ticket, asking if we can sit down, enquiring about movie times, etc.

Most of what we do with language is broken done into to chunks, which are used and reused to meet functional needs. Don`t try to teach the rules, or the why`s, take care of the how-to`s and the rules will become apparent to the learner in a way that is more meaningful.

Take introductions for example, depending on your level of English or the formality required this can come out so many different ways.

Imagine trying to explain “I`ve heard so much about you” when “nice to meet you would” suffice.
