Learn Bengali
teaching the Bible 2 years ago

I realized that there are barely over 100 Jehovah’s Witnesses preaching in Bengladesh and since I am a qualified Bible teacher I would like to help out there. When I read on-line that English is the second language spoken there I realized that there might be an English community where I could preach since that is my first (my only) language. Perhaps I would only need to learn “survival Bangla” to get by and might find an American or England-based company for whom I could work (I have very good grammar in English despite my total ignorance of Bangla). I know Sesame Street has a presence there thanks to PBS. I don’t know how tolerant the political and religious climate is there or how I would ever convince my husband to go along w/ my scheme. He is also a qualified minister but is not very adventurous and has well-established roots here.

Lots of obstacles to over-come, but it is fun to dream about what-if. The alphabet is so pretty and reverent-looking. I figure that if I put forth the effort to learn a language, I’ll be able to find some use for it.

You are right, in Bangladesh, English is very common in the city. I can describe everyone as speaking “Banglish” too each other. Good luck with Bengali.

I’m sure if you joined up with a group of other Jehovas’ Witnesses there, perhaps they could help you out )

And the whole cultural-immersion thing could help you out in learning Bengali lol

English is very common in Bangladesh. This was already commented, but they speak “Banglish”. My husband and his friends do this alot when they speak to each other. It has actually helped me understand what they are saying. I have yet to master speaking bengali, but I have been able to understand most of it when someone is speaking it.

Jedisena has gotten 3 cheers on this entry.
