play the violin better
Unimproving 2 years ago

I’ve been playing since I was in 5th grade, and I had gotten better through 6th and 7th grade. But this year, I became part of second violin, which really isn’t that bad, but I miss playing melody, and even when I try hard I still could not make it to first violin for the last concert. There were originally 7 second violins and I would always be first or second chair. Now there are only four, but I’m still first chair. There were originally 5 firsts, now there are 8. I really don’t understand why I can’t get first violin, when I always get first chair on normal playing test. But when it comes to first violin auditions, I get nervous. Can someone please give me tips to help me with auditioning, because next year I need to audition for the orchestra, and I want to get into Concert Orchestra, which is one higher from the lower orchestra (Cavalier Orchestra) and one lower from the highest orchestra (Chamber Orchestra).

Tips.

Well, I’m 17, and I’ve been playing since 4th grade. Getting into first violin was easy. I spent one year out of my 3 years so far of high school in second violin. This year and my freshman year I am/was in First. Auditions are easy here are some tips on how to get into first violin.

-Practice a LOT. At least 30-45 minutes a day. I practice like 3 hours everyday. I do it here and there though. The trick is to add on like 10 minutes each day.

-Don’t stress over auditions. Practice the material well ahead of time. If you have to play: scales, sightreading, and your own solo, pick a solo you know well (the solo most likely should show your techinical ability, as well as your shifting and everything, bowing, etc.) Just don’t feel nervous, ever. It makes your hands clammy and you won’t be able to shift well or use vibrato well.

-Never, NEVER feel discouraged. Don’t ever say, “I can’t do this,” or “I’ll never be able to play this or that.” That only hurts you. One of my older friends told me that once, cause I was doing the same thing. I got down on myself, but now I’m playing the Sibelius and Tchaikovsky violin concertos flawlessly.

Those are 3 easy ways to get instantly better at auditioning and playing in general. Be confident in your ability.

What is your skill like? From what you say, it’s sounds okay. I’m also a young composer. I should write you a little sonata or solo, with piano. If you’re interested, I shall do so. If you want to message me, my screenname on here is the same as my AOL instant messenger screenname.

Good luck with everything. I hope you use my tips to help you become a better violinist. :)
