Pitch, pitch, pitch

I’d make more money if I would pitch more stories to national magazines. But between work and life and family and friends and volunteering, I often don’t take time to send story ideas to magazine editors.

I’m hoping to establish a new pattern – where I spend a half day a week working on my pitches. Or two two hour blocks. I’m thinking that Thursdays are my day to begin this pitch-fest.

Anyone have advice on what works well to carve out time for something necessary but not as rewarding as the other work?

For my part, I find tasks to fit into two general categories – onerous and fulfilling. As long as a task is onerous, it is nearly impossible to bring your energy to it.

For tasks like that, I almost have to promise someone I’ll do it. For those tasks, I am the little kid again whose mom is standing over, switch in hand, making her do it. I balk, I want to run.

As writers, we have our practices which can be very well defined. When I am working on something that has to be done, it gets worked first. Generally to completion. In reading other people’s practices here, I see many similarities. Ritual plays a part – the coffee & internet morning ritual, before getting down to work.

Maybe by ritualizing this task, it will cease to be onerous.

Maybe designate Tuesday as contact day. Remind yourself that along the way, you will meet people who will support your writing, encourage you, and eventually the network of contacts will mean livelihood. Publication. Everything you seek, you will find.
