give a damn (read all 5 entries…)
Could I pose a question 2 years ago

to the give-a-damn’ers?

What do you guys think (or know) is worse :
reading a newspaper (wasting paper) or
reading the news on the internet on your computer (wasting energy)

Oh, I agree totally SoCal. I’m all for learning, and knowledge, and growing and communicating… I just meant the question from a ‘green’ point of view. I don’t have kids to pass my world onto, but others do. From that standpoint, and (maybe even more importantly for me personally) because I’m an animal lover, it’s the right thing for me to do to make as little detrimental impact upon it as possible. :)

I would give a thousand cheers for that entry if I could!

Absolutely!

My non-scientific un-researched inclination

would be that using the computer is less tolling on the environment, for several reasons. Not only does the newspaper have to printed on paper using lead-based inks generally, but it has to be transported in CO2 emitting vehicles.

While there are renewable and sustainable sources of energy (solar, wind, hydraulic, et al) it seems to me that growing trees merely for the purpose of printing paper that only contains a day’s news is rather expensive. Granted, the paper can be recycled, but so can the Internet’s content.

At the end of the day, everything you do contaminates and pollutes the environment—heck, even you breathing contributes to global warming! But that mentality would negate our existence and our inalienable right to be happy, so what is critical is finding out a way in which the waste from our activities can be reabsorbed/regenerated by the environment at a faster rate than we can introduce it. It’s a tricky balance and unfortunately, the effects of unbalances in Nature often become apparent once they are irreversible or have reached a critical mass, which is why we haven’t even seen the tip of the iceberg (pun intended) about climate crisis.

The only thing one can do really, and at the risk of sounding repetitive and cliche, is “reduce, reuse and recycle”.

Cheers for giving a damn :)

That was my

non-scientific, un-researched inclination too. Thanks for your input, A – sounds logical to me!

Oh, and I’ve been giving a damn for a while now. I lost a little hope when I moved to a big city from an African game reserve; but the entries that I’ve seen coming from this group have helped me see that individuals can make a difference. ‘Every little helps.’

You just gave me

cheer number 4,500 :)

And well deserved too, I say! ;)

I'm holding my breath...

don’t want to make global warming worse! :-p

so can you quantify the CO2 generated by heavy breathing from riding your bike versus driving the same distance?

Good question

I researched a bit and found that the average volume of a human breath is 0.25 L at rest, 20% of which is carbon dioxide1. During exercise, the exhalation volume doubles, thus 0.1 L of CO2 are exhaled per breath.

At 25°C and 1 atm, this would equate to roughly 4.09×10-3 moles CO2, or 0.180 grams per exhalation. Assuming 40 exhalations per minute during exercise, and run for an arbitrary value of 10 miles at 10 mph, we exhale a total of 43.16 g.

The average vehicle in the US, on the other hand, emits 1.1 lb CO2 per mile2. I think I can stop here :)

joie de vivre is feeling better

If you think about it, the weight of the car + driver is a lot more than the weight of the cyclist + bike. It’s going to take a lot more fuel (and then generate a lot more of a waste product), to move the car than the bike.

Even a relatively heavy bike and rider combo (me and my husband on the tandem) weighs only 400 pounds. How much do we weigh when we take our lighter of our two cars, the Honda two-door hatchback?

Yup,

that’s exactly what I was thinking about –all the dead weight we schlep around every day. The alternative, of course, would be motorcycles but we need the extra parts (which have weight) for safety. We could certainly do with smaller cars though, I don’t think a Bummer Hummer is any safer than a Mini; in fact, I think it’s a hazard to smaller cars! It’s a simple matter of mass and inertia. As my physics professor used to say, “I’m not impressed by how fast you can accelerate, but how fast you can brake”

whoa!

Thanks, Chofa…

So glad to have such a brainy geek in the family! :-)

And in your honor, I am going to go and steam my chofas right now…

:)

Stoichiometry is so much fun. If nothing else, my two semesters of chemistry will allow me to answer questions from my 43T friends :p

And please enjoy your alcachofas doubly on my behalf! Are you using any kind of sauce for dipping, or do you go straight for the heart?
