Save $1500 in my savings account. (read all 15 entries…)
I talked with my "financial adviser"... 2 years ago

about this goal this weekend. She said she’d like for me to save $1000 really quickly and then add less to it until I get to the $1500 level while beginning to attack some of my debts. I’m having to use savings this month to live on, and I will hopefully have some things coming my way to build it back up soon, though.

Saving Money

Some options for saving money that you may not have thought of include:

Adjust your tax withholding
If you got a big refund back from the IRS, you’re actually letting the government make interest off your money. Reevaluate your exemptions and you will get more money in your check each payday.

Pretend you didn’t get that raise
When you get a raise, funnel the extra money directly to savings or investments instead of looking at it as extra money to spend. As long as you were holding your head above water on what you were making previously, you won’t miss the extra income.

Take charge of your spending habits
If you have a credit card, consider the interest rate. It may be worthwhile to switch to a card with a lower interest rate. Also, consider the costs of the restaurants you select to eat out in. If the food is just as good yet cheaper at that dinner as compared to the fancy restaurant, choose the cheaper place to conserve your expenses.

I would rather...

get a refund or not have to pay, and I know I could do that, but I’m just scared of making a mistake and having to pay into the government. It is a good idea, though, that the person’s financial philosophy I subscribe to advocates, as well.

I won’t get a raise at least until December if we get one then, but I probably will do as you suggest if that comes. (If not on my own, then my “financial adviser” would advise against me using the money for other purposes more than likely.)

No credit card, though! Yea!!! :D

Good ideas about comparing prices, too.

Deni H has gotten 2 cheers on this entry.
