apologize less
I'm not sorry! 4 years ago

I probably apologize twenty times or more every day. It’s stupid. Some things just aren’t a big enough deal to apologize for. For example, I used to bump into my co-workers all the time when I worked at a coffee shop, and both of us would almost always say “sorry”. It’s not like you can avoid bumping into someone when you’re working in close quarters, flying around trying to do 5 things at once. By the same token, you’re not going to get mad if your co-worker bumps into you, unless he or she really injures you (not likely).

I have tried limiting myself to no more than 5 “sorry’s” per day. It has made my email writing more confident and authoritative, and I have neither assumed blame for things which are not my fault (or anyone’s fault, in many cases), nor elicited blame from others.

What surprised me was that my habit is most ingrained with my boyfriend. I blew all 5 “sorry’s” on him the first day I tried it! He wouldn’t mind if I stopped apologizing—he over-apologizes, too, and would probably like to stop.

Ideas on this subject anyone?

:)

gasp!

That’s cute very cute. All 5 sorry’s on the boy eh? lol That’s really cute :D

I have to learn to apologize less too. But at least sometimes (these days) when I say ‘Sorry’ I don’t really mean it and you can tell :P

But yeah, I say sorry quite frequently and I really don’t have any useful suggestions :P I just liked your post. Sorry. :P

Maybe make a ‘sorry jar’? :P

thanks!

Hi Julie,

Cool, thanks for your response to my post. It’s nice to know I’m not the only person out there trying to kick the “sorry” habit.

The boy has been good about reminding me when I’m apologizing needlessly. One day he said, “let’s agree never to apologize to each other about something that we both chose to do.” Makes sense, doesn’t it? Easier said than done, at least for me… but I’m trying.

I think the jar idea is cool-it adds some accountability to the goal. It would be great if there was something akin to nicotine replacement out there for over-apologizers. “Hey, I’ve got the patch on today-you’re all just going to have to live with my imperfections.” ;) Maybe I’ll pretend my teeth-whitening gum is anti-apology gum…

No shame, no blame…
