The Corporate Ladder - East vs West & PhD glass ceiling

Since I have moved from the East coast to the West I believe that you don’t have to:
1. just put in your time and gain ‘seniority’
2. be white
3. be male

I have always believed that one’s value to a company is just that VALUE. One should be paid and paid attention to based on creative ideas, logical implimentation, realistic goal-setting, and achievement.

It seems that the West Coasters are more comfortable with a 30-year-old CEO and women VPs, which were nearly unheard of in Richmond, VA.

I have not yet found how to show my value to a company…how to get them to see my potential and help me reach it for mutual benefit.

I am looking for some advice. I have been employed by a Biotech for nearly 5 years and have only have one promotion (sort-of, via an addition of job levels company wide). I have a BS and have 7-8 years experience. I’ve shown I’ve got hands (can do lab experiments), that I can analyze data, write reports, plan experiments, and plan whole projects. I have even supervised, well officially co-supervised, a summer intern.

While these are important tasks to have done for the company. I think I have a lot more to bring to the table, but cannot find an opportunity to show it.

I’ve found that the most important step to getting ahead is building and managing relationships with people and to try to do it as high in the chain as possible.

So many of us are too busy doing things to take credit for them, which leaves room for others to take that credit for us and get ahead. Make sure that everyone realizes the great things that have happened as a result of you brilliance and long hours.

Never hurts to go back for your MBA either. I had an incredible time and got ahead it my career as a result of it.
