write a sci-fi novel
Untitled 4 years ago

I’ve actually started. I don’t have the entire story thought out, but have a significant start (several chapters now). I’ve written huge technical books before, and I understand that books are just made of lots of words that you must put down on “paper”. So, a lot of what I’m writing is very rough, very much at the macro level. But there’s a definite joy in going back and refining the bigger picture stuff. That’s where the story begins to happen, and sometimes shifts the remaining bigger picture stuff, but at a fair price.

Find the right coaches and feedback

That’s a great approach and the best thing to do is only consult only people whose writing you admire. Do NOT get into newsgroups with semi professional or marginally professional hacks and “editors”. They like to feel important. We’ve all had that happen in the rassf newsgroup. (rec.arts.sf )
Science Fiction coaching and writer groups to watch out for:
Big red flag UNCLE JIM = really is James MacDonald, or Jim MacDonald, wife is Debra Doyle, they spawn those hokey hokey “reviews” as Red Mike Reviews (a bash fest posing as a reviewer) and also “Uncle Jim” will help you write. (Uncle Jim sounds like the neighborhood clown who smiles but is really creepy doesn’t it??) They write those mediocre wizard series that are Harry Potter rip offs and RIP RIP RIP new writers and call it coaching. They are mean and hang out with a few of their own kind, get in cahoots to try to influence other people against people they don’t like (especially new writers who fans take a liking to). (They try to ridicule and make people feel stupid for liking somebody they want to black ball).
It’s a snake pit.
Point being, steer clear of writer killers.
Good luck!
I’m on my fifth chapter of my first novel. Have written for newspapers for years.
Go for people who know how to be constructive.

Michael Buffington has gotten 3 cheers on this entry.
