Well, the best thing of course would be having the chance to live amongst people who speak the language all the time.
But if you can’t do that, I would recommend watching films and soap operas in portuguese. I’ve done that while learning french and really helped!

Another thing, there are differences between european portuguese and brazilian portuguese, mostly concerning the accents which are very distinct. You better choose one of the two. :)
