ride the Alaska ferry from Bellingham

People camp out on the ferry. Sounds like rugged (but cozy) fun.

From Bellingham to the end of the line...

...is about 20 hours.

(No, I didn’t know that off the top of my head—I had to look it up.)

And it operates year-round.

Adar is back.

Cool!

That sounds like so much fun. I love ferries… some tamer but also fun ones:

—Catalina Island ferry (from L.A)

—San Francisco bay ferries

Thanks for telling us about this one!

If you are fond of ferries

keep these more obscure ones on your list:

-the ferry which crosses the Ohio River from Kentucky to Hardin County to Route 1, near Cave-in-Rock and Golconda, Illinois. There are river pirate stories to listen to, stories of caves and pioneers.

-the ferry that goes over the Green River near Mammoth Cave in Kentucky.

-the ferries that ply back and forth from New Orleans to Algiers, on the Mississippi.

-one of my dreams now is to take a ferry from Ireland to Wales, or another ferry from Ireland to the Basque Countries.

Juneau to Bellingham 2000

I did it and camped outside. Can be gloomy but amazing too. See my pre-digital camera photos at :
http://er216.tripod.com/ak2.html . Didn’t see much sun.

I plan to do it again sometime in my life but trust me, it’s not glamourous! And I would sleep on the deck again but would have a warmer, all-weather sleeping bag.

Great!

No, it doesn’t look glamorous, that’s for sure, but I still want to do it!

There are several ferries

I’ve taken the one from near Vancouver-Horseshoe Bay- to Nanaimo, and after hitchhiking to the north end of Victoria Island, I took a ferry from Port Hardy to Prince Rupert.

The experience is well worth the cost of the ticket.

The Canadian ferries belong to a different company.
