keeping memories

My family lives far away so we communicate a lot through email and phone. I save special emails into folders to read when I am missing them and need them close (and it’s 3 am over there)
I also save the handwritten letters and cards they send.
I also write my mom and grandmothers’ recipes in a document to save online, but most importantly I write it in my recipe book. I often call my mom or both my grandmothers to ask them questions about the recipes or get a new one. I am not that great at cooking so any help they can give me is appreciated. They never measure!! so…they guesstimate…and my end product often requires a phone call back to report and learn. :) Saving these recipes is very important to me. I am also starting to record my sister and (gasp) my own recipes so that future generations might benefit. :)
I’ve asked every member of my family for their favorite church hymn and wrote them on the back of my Bible. When I am in church and sing them it’s nice to be reminded of my family.
One summer when I was visiting I sat with my grandmother and we went through her Bible and mine and shared the verses we had underlined. Now I have hers on my Bible and she has mine on hers underlined as well.
Thank you for asking this question…you just reminded me once again of the importance of keeping memories alive.

Thanks for the response

Alfaiorcito,
I know what you mean about families not being close. Ours are now far away from us. Thank goodness for phones and email. None of us are great letter writers, but we call. My son in Alaska even plays the piano for me on the phone. I miss watching him play.

Your ideas are very good about saving the emails etc in a folder for review.

I wish I had paid more attention when my parents and grandparents were alive. We take things so for granted when we are young. I now have so many questions and no one to ask. All my Uncles and Aunts are gone now too. So I am trying to locate distant relatives.

Thank goodness the world is getting smaller due to the Internet.

I too an collecting my Family recipes and putting them on my computer. Plan on putting them in a ebook.

At special occasions and holidays we cook our traditional family recipes and that brings back fond memoriees of family gatherings.

Love the story about your Grandmother sharing underlined verses in the bible. Great idea. I now have my Grandmothers Old Worn Out Bible. What a treasure.

Thanks for sharing.
