My wife and I both wish we could’ve seen the days before the Eisenhower Interstate system—we have a sort of sepia-toned nostalgic picture in our heads of endless 2-lane roads, teepee-shaped motels and loads of “giant ball of string” kinds of attractions. The last real vacation we took (before the kids) we did our best to avoid the expressways for a week of driving, and we loved it.
We have a far-off goal, once the kids are all older, to get a monstrous Olds Vista Cruiser wagon and cruise Route 66 from Chicago to California. Okay, so the old Vista Cruiser is mostly me…but I think we really have to do this in some really cool old car.
