get some hardy and beautiful houseplants (read all 16 entries…)
broke down

and purchased ANOTHER African Violet…
I used to have tons of these as a child and I suppose I am regressing. but they are so interesting, and soft, and pretty. I would love to one day see them growing in the wild…if they ever really did.

The only plant I'm good at

my mom was a whiz, and taught me how to propigate them. (and I love doing this)

When I left home, I had around 20 plants. My husband has been able to keep about half to 75% of them alive.

But, it took a good week’s worth of showing him “see how the leaves are pointing downward now? that’s when they’re asking for water”

“see how now, after you’ve watered them, the leaves are pointing upward? very different, right?”

I sometimes go to the nursery and want to cry when I see all the broken off leaves from being moved around.

I bring them home, stick them in rooting hormone, and pot them.

I’ve got every color from white to almost black-purple.

:D
These are goregous!
Try snipping off a few of the outer leaves, and potting them in violet mix—I bet you’ll end up with so many plants you won’t know where to put them!

I swear you

are my long lost sister. My Mom and I used to do this too. I pretended to be a mad scientist and attempted to splice together all sorts of varieties. I think for the moment, I’m just going to let them grow, though I’ve thought about putting them all together in a huge pot…

Heehee!

My mom could graft, I can’t.
She had roses that were several varieties growing on one plant.

I’ve never been successful at it.
I guess this was all before my asceptic technique was perfected :)

I hope to have at least a few plants still alive when I get home. If not, luckily they’re inexpensive and easy to grow!
