Writing groups never worked well for me. What I needed was effective feedback, not encouragement. Closest I’d seen to a useful writing group was the Melange on Mondays up at the Hugo House. Or some of the small private classes offered around town by certain published writers, tho they can be picky about who they accept.

Effective feedback is great
But I sure could use some encouragement too.
Lots of places to find encouragement in positive ways. Writing classes did that for me. And believe it or not, simple blogging as well. Remember the Internet is a meritocracy. If your words are good, people will tell you so. Good way to cut your teeth. Not that all writing groups are bad, it’s just that the useful ones are rare.
