sell my photos
making some passive income

Does anyone have any tips or suggestions on how I can perhaps earn some side income from my photos ?

Comments:

I’ve had some small success selling my prints through EBay.com or you can buy your own domain name and list your prints for sale.

Hi Zenia – You have a very nice website and your photos are very inspirational. Have you managed to make some sales through your site ?

Chris

Hi Chris :P – I actually just launched my website yesterday. It was up before but only as a gallery. I’ll let you know though! :)

It takes money....

to make money. It’s cliche but it’s true. Honestly, to pay for prints, mats and frames, you have spent a bit of money. You have to have a good variety of product to show people in order to make sales. Now, this is true of a gallery or coffeeshop like location. Online it’s a little easier and a little harder. The easier part is that you can buy just a couple of frames, and have the prints ready to fill orders. But it is harder, because you have to bring people TO your website.

I am slowly developing this process for my own work right now. My approach is going to be to work both. By putting the framed pieces up in the galleries or coffeeshops, I can get people to either buy them there, or pull them into my website. That helps with web traffic, where I can offer a wider selection of prints, sizes and frame/mat color themes.

As you can see, selling your work involves an investment. I can tell you that I had good success in small ways with little 5×7 prints on 8×10 mat board. The boards are $1-$2 each and the prints ran me about $.40. Wrap them up in the 8×10 plastic sleaves (sold at photo shops) and you are ready to go.

So for about $2.50 I could make a small piece that sold for between $7-$10. It’s a nice little profit, but it takes money to make them. If you are making 20-30 prints, so the cost to you is about $50-$75, even with just small unframed pieces.

So that’s the advice I can offer from my own experiences so far. I can tell you that people never buy the ones you are SURE will sell, and you really never know what the public wants. Just throw your work out there and see who bites!

Best of luck to you,

Hi Katie !

Thank you so much for your very practice advice on this. I totally agree with you – it does take money to make money.

Best of luck for your business !

Stock Photography

Chris, you can easily sell your photos as stock. I’ve been doing this for about half a year and have no complaints. It’s actually doing pretty good. All details on my website
