donate money to charity
My donation goal is 0.7% of my gross income 2 years ago

Some time during last year I read Jeffrey Sachs’ book The End of Poverty. Finland does not meet the official goal (0.7% of gross national product) for development aid – very few countries do, I think Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Luxembourg and Netherlands are the only ones.

Since I am fairly well-to-do at the moment, I decided to try to use 0.7% of my personal gross income for charitable purposes. I made practical donations via a couple of Finnish charity groups. What did I get? I bought a cow, chickens, school supplies, light, saplings, a goat, pigs, medical services and AIDS work for developing countries. I mean to do this again in 2007.

Missa is back to work:(

I am surprised at how few people donate

to charity. There are so many exciting things that you can do with your money in almost any interest or charity. I love that you can buy a cow and chickens, etc. How much more can you impact a desparately poor family than by giving them a source of food for years to come!

Cheers to you!

Monthly covenant

I have a monthly covenant that goes out of my account to a charity in India. The government adds Gift Aid to that amount so some of my tax money is donated too.

I did a door knocking appeal for the charity in 1998 and was so impressed with the work that I started a covenant myself. I have increased the amount over the years and I’ve also been to the region, near Pune, to see the work the organisation is doing.

The media makes out that charitable donations are swiped by the local mafia or by admin and only a small percentage gets through. That’s not the case. A small amount goes a long way. You won’t miss the money but they will benefit greatly.
